”Mitä on nää tuoksut mun ympärilläin?
Mitä on tämä hiljaisuus?
Mitä tietävi rauha mun sydämessäin,
tää suuri ja outo uus?
Minä kuulen, kuink’ kukkaset kasvavat
ja metsässä puhuvat puut.
Minä luulen, nyt kypsyvät unelmat
ja toivot ja tou’ot muut.
Kaikk’ on niin hiljaa mun ympärilläin,
kaikk’ on niin hellää ja hyvää.
Kukat suuret mun aukeevat sydämessäin
ja tuoksuvat rauhaa syvää.”

I have spent many summer vacations working on these works of the Elegia -collection at my cottage by the lake Pielinen in Lieksa. The pieces bring back memories of family, friends, sounds, scents, and moods - the joy and sadness of life.
She walks on flowers for a wanton while, She always has music to greet her.
So slender her shape and so sweet her smile, When silently I go to meet her.
Nevermore while I live shall my music die,
I sing her daily and nightly. Evermore on the wings of a song may she fly,
And walk on the flowers feather-lightly.

At my cottage, by my harp, I can see over the lake and into the woods and hear the birds, the wind and the waves in the lake. During the pauses I take in the long days I spend playing, I quickly go to pick some blueberries or mushrooms, do a bit of boating, check the fishnets, carry some firewood, do some stonework, go swimming or heat up the sauna. Apart from my family, the Jack Russell terriers Lila and Tryffeli have been important in keeping me company at the cottage.
I enjoy the melancholy of rainy weather, the wildness of storms over lake Pielinen, the sunny fair days and the romanticism of beautiful sunsets.
To me, the peaceful summers at my cottage are a precious means of winding down after the concert season and picking up energy for the next autumn.
”What is this fragrance around me?
What is this quietness?
What is this promise of peace in my heart,
what strange, grand, new thing is this?
I hear how the flowers are growing
and the talk of the trees in the wood.
I think that my old dreams are ripening
all my hopes, all the things that I sowed.
Everything's quiet around me,
Everything's gentle and sweet.
Great flowers are opening here in my heart
with a fragrance of deepest peace.”
